Movies Characters We ALL Love to Hate

Let's admit it, we all hate certain characters that have graced the screen. But most of the characters that we have hated, we secretly love because their brilliance is in being able to hate them. The character is so good, so well thought out and brings such a richness to the story...that we hate them, but in turn love them! It's a love-hate relationship.

1. Bane (Tom Hardy), The Dark Knight Rises
Is anyone out there trying to bring more destruction than Bane? I think not. But he is such a badass in the whole taking down Gotham thing, that you have to kind of love the character. And let's all admit that the mask is the best part!

2. Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton), Harry Potter Franchise
If you ask me, this woman is worse than Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange combined! Umbridge is solid evil, but you have to love her. If not for anything else, you love J.K. Rowling for creating a character that is so completely easy to hate. She brings the cats, the pink, the truth serum and the locket to Harry, Ron & Hermione. I am filled with hatred toward this character, and I love it!

3. Lotso (Ned Beatty), Toy Story 3
This bear is downright rude and crude. But he makes the whole movie. You expect him to be this cuddly purple bear with some gay flair and a great attitude on being a toy. But he is nothing like Andy's toys and wants to take down anyone who tries to mess with Sunnyside Day Care's toy regime.

4. Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), Misery
This woman is straight up crazy! She maims James Caan for Pete's sake. But, her persona and demeanor throughout the entire film is so energized and creepy that it makes you think what a brilliant character. Of course when she dies at the end it is epic and so we don't truly have to hold that hatred forever, but James Caan can't walk so I still hold her responsible.

5. Hannibal Lector (Anthony Hopkins), The Silence of the Lambs
The most disturbing thing about this movie to me, and believe me, I think the whole thing is disturbing, was that I actually liked Lector by the end of the film. It's ridiculous after everything he has done and all the cruelty and pain he has caused, I actually like him and wanting to see good things for him. I hated him and liked him at the same time, that's a weird emotion to have running through your veins. It means: excellent writing.

6. Paul Young (Mark Moses), Desperate Housewives
This dude is beyond mental. First he digs up a pool to cover up a family secret that ends up getting exposed. Then he tries to bring a second chance house to Wisteria Lane allowing convicts to run wild and eventually leading to the cause of a riot in the streets. Finally, when he turned himself into the police, I felt a deep sadness inside that I was not expecting to ever find.

7. Janice Litman (Maggie Wheeler), Friends
"Oh my god, Chandler Bing!" When you read that, you know you hear her painful, squeaky, nasally voice. It takes over your mind and all your thoughts and you are frozen! Just kidding, but the genius behind this characters runs deep. If you ask anyone who they hate the most from the series they would say her, however we love to hate her. She shows up in every single season except for season 6. So you know that the brilliance is greater than the hate in the end.

8. Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton), Harry Potter Franchise
This kid is tough as nails, haha what a joke. Malfoy is a pansy, along with his parents. But, we all hated him in the books and in the films. He represents every bully that any kid has ever had to punch in the face (go Hermione). He the constant antagonist in all of our lives, making us better. So really we love him, but there is a little bit of animosity there at the same time.

9. Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), Glee
The very little that I have seen of this show has formed two thoughts in my head. 1. Sue Sylvester is a mean woman and 2. what an amazing character, that's epic writing. So, there you have it: the inner battle of hating what a character does but at the same time thinking it brings the best part of the show and definitely amps up the comedy.

10. Regina George (Rachel McAdams), Mean Girls
Literally, I would say I have a hard time hating this character, because I love it that much! However, if I knew her in real life, I would hate her with a deep passion. Everything about this film screams best writing and there are many characters to love/hate. Here is why Regina George wins this spot: "This is Susan from Planned Parenthood, I have her test results. If you could have her call me as soon as she can. It's urgent, thank you." Mean, but completely true of teenage nastiness.

11. Gollum (Andy Serkis) The Lord of the Rings Franchise
This little dude is evil and wants nothing more than the ring so that he can be happy all by himself. He cares nothing for others, talks in a crazy voice and seriously almost kills Frodo and Sam half a dozen times. But he is a great character, and we love him even though is confused about his identity and mostly everything else!

12. Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop), Gilmore Girls
This woman confuses me more than any other character. One minute I hate her for her massive amounts of meddling and maliciousness and the next moment you see how much she truly cares for Lorelai & Rory. She is a deeply confused character who has everything she could ever want in life but is never truly able to achieve happiness within that life. I sometimes yell at the television over the tricks she pulls, but the Gilmore universe would be a sad, lonely place without her presence.

13. Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen), Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
Seriously, I really don't hate this guy at all, but he is the antagonist of the film. His character is present to shoot Ricky Bobby down and to take racing seriously while still bringing a comedic break to the already hilarious film. His accent is horrible and I hate his hairdo, but I love the idea for the character.

14. Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), The Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise
Remember guys, at one time, this guy was a bad guy. His whole reputation is dragged through the mud when he partners up with everyone else in the later films, but in The Curse of the Black Pearl he imprisons Miss Swan. His character brings so much richness to the story and his demeanor makes you wish you could hate him. But overall, he is the best to hate because without him the franchise would have sucked.

15. Wade (Kevin Bacon), The River Wild
This character is one that seriously scares me. This whole river-rafting trip gone awry ending up in almost death. It's a fast-paced thriller of a movie and Kevin Bacon's character is what drives all the excitement. You hate him because of what he is doing and his reasons for imprisoning the family, but you love the brutality and the essence of the character.

BONUS: Miranda Priestley (Meryl Streep), The Devil Wears Prada
I guess I couldn't really make this list without this character. It's hard for me to put Meryl's name anywhere near the word hate, but the word love is present too! This is the original character, the best that you love to hate. She is the dragon lady who appears to have a soul of dark black coal. But she really has quite the heart and doesn't know how to use it. She embodies the meaning of love to hate.
