Watch of the Week

Today, I am premiering a new post that will be added every Monday. It's called Watch of the Week. I will bring you my personal review of the movie along with some fun facts and trivia. The movie of choice may be in theaters, a new release or a diamond in the ruff from awhile back.

This first Watch of the Week is truly a diamond in the ruff. It's a magical musical in which a courtesan falls in love with a poor, desolate poet and risks her whole life to be with him. If you haven't seen this one yet, or have no idea what on earth I could be referring to, it's Moulin Rouge. The original musical was released in 1952 and it starred Zsa Zsa Gabor. The film itself it set in Paris in the year 1889.  The movie was redone and hit theaters in 2001. This time starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. I saw this movie in 2001, and I was 11 years old. I will say that this is not a movie for kids. There are many raw sexual references and the women who work in Moulin Rouge are sometimes used as prostitutes. Of course, as an eleven year old, most of the information was way over my head. My sister and I just really fell in love with the music.

And truly, if you love music this movie is surely for you. All of the music is from the 20th century and snippets of songs that are very familiar are snuck into very creative, beautiful songs. The ballads are rich with great lyrics that are weaved so inexplicably into the story-line itself. It's a story of desperate star-crossed lovers who can't ever be together because their daily lives are worlds apart. Kidman knocks this one out of the park, and her voice is amazing. Yes, she really does all of the singing in the film. She is beautiful in this film, with all of her costumes and her amazing acting. I would truly say she was at her prime in this film. Her counterpart is played by McGregor who is nothing short of adorable. He plays the part of the poor poet with no money but such a belief in love so well. He truly believes that his and Satine's love for one another can conquer all of the problems that are facing them and threatening to tear them apart. Danger and of course guns are involved in this one for sure. Favorite character in this one is definitely Harold Zidler, the owner of the Moulin Rouge. He is played by the ever-amazing Jim Broadbent. I don't want to give any more for those of you who haven't seen it before. If you have seen it, watch it again. It's one of those magical films where you can see so much more when watching it for the second, third or even the twentieth time.
