Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Yesterday, March 6th, seemed like just another day. Until I was riding in my sisters car and remembered that Tina Fey's new comedy had premiered on Netflix. As a person who fondly refers to myself as a grandma, and goes to bed extremely early (yes, even on Friday nights), I couldn't stop watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

If you are like me and never got over the fact that 30 Rock ended or if you currently have a gaping hole in your heart labeled Parks and Rec then get on Netflix immediately and settle in! Ellie Kemper shines in the plucky, energetic role of a woman who is enamoured with the streets of New York and everything 2015 after being kept underground in a bunker by a cult leader for fifteen years. The music, feel and all around energy make you feel like you are back with Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey at the top of The Rock. Plus it doesn't hurt that Jane Krakowski is up to her old tricks as well as a inflated New York housewife.

I'm planning on watching all day. And then I'll head into a Netflix inspired depression as usual when I finish the first season. Let the laying around commence.

Golden Globes 2015

Last night was the kickoff to the 2015 award circuit. It was a strange and unpredictable night to say the least. Lots of surprises and lots of one liners from Fey and Poehler. What does this mean for the rest of the season? The Globes are usually seen as a huge predictor for the creed da la creme: The Academy Awards. Time will tell this year, but if last night was any foreshadowing it will prove for an interesting and unconventional season.

Birdman was expected to do well and do well it did. Michael Keaton won for Best Actor- Musical or Comedy and the filmed picked up Best Screeenplay. However it lost out for Best Picture to the dark horse The Grand Budapest Hotel.  I highly doubt that trend will continue throughout the season. But I'll also be honest. After last night my predicting skills are feeling weak and out of touch.

Another shock last night was How to Train Your Dragon II beating out The Lego Movie. Although the animated film isn't usually a huge deal it added to the feel of last night being out of alignment for the typical Globes. McConaughey lost out as did True Detective in general. And Amazon's new series about a transgender parent nabbed up two unexpected awards as well. I don't know about you but sometimes The Globes can feel like a slap in the face because I realize how much I don't know about tv when it comes to Netflix, Amazon and more. These networks being included in the ranks has certainly changed things. Like Gina Rodriguez winning for her brand new show on The CW of all networks. Makes me wonder why Gossip Girl was never nominated back in the day. Just kidding.

In terms of fashion the night was strange as well. The most beautiful trend was glitter and tons of it. Other trends were pantsuits, white and lost of cleavage.

Best Dressed
Before I lost these ladies and one male, I want to make a disclaimer. I do not claim to know anything about fashion, just entertainment. I make this list solely on who I think looks classy
Christine Barinski
Amal Clooney
Reese Witherspoon
Felicity Jones
Amy Adams
Felicity Huffman
Kevin Hart

Worst Dressed
Julianne Moore: her aluminum foil looking dress turned into Tim Allen's character from The Shaggy Dog at the bottom.
Claire Danes
Kerry Washington

All in all it was an eventful night. It's a sad day to know that was  Fey and Poehler's last time hosting. But the Oscars are right around the corner and Neil Patrick Harris is going to take the night by storm.

Paul Blart Mall Cop 2

Don't get me wrong, the original Paul Blart Mall Cop was a triumph of funny. Dumb storyline, yes. Stupid jokes, yes. Kevin James at his finest, of course. Which is why after watching the new trailer for the sequel I am saddened. The film will make some money but it looks like another sequel that will disappoint. There is a lot of old lady beat downs, weird interactions with animals and a ragtag ensemble of security taking on the Las Vegas casino strip.

I don't know about you but I am bored already and I feel like I have already seen the film.  That's one of the problems with the film industry right now: no one is truly coming up with original ideas. Yes, some sequels are amazing and can be truly better than the first. But others leave the film industry looking like a bit of a joke and people wishing they didn't spend their money. Now, I know right now you are thinking that I am being really harsh...but someone needs to say it. The film industry needs new and different ideas. Reinventing another franchise about only one teenager being able to save the world (Yes the idea was great at first but now it is overused and dried up) and creating sequels for good movies left and right is leaving us bored.

Meanwhile, HBO and Showtime are offering fresh and riveting storylines that a person cannot only watch once a week, but can binge watch to their heart's content. Hollywood needs to recapture the essence and magic of filmmaking before it becomes obsolete.

So we will see about Paul Blart in April but I don't have high hopes. Maybe I am the only one questioning its hilarity after the release of the trailer, but a hunch tells me that I'm not.

Why the 7th Heaven Theme Song Will Never Sound the Same Again

Stephen Collins, an actor most well known for his iconic role on the nineties show 7th Heaven, was ousted as being a child molester a few weeks ago. Since then the media has been all in a frenzy and Collins and his estranged wife have put the houses up for sale.

As I was getting ready to write this post I was touched with a spot of sadness. I am a 90's child myself, and grew up watching all the hours and hours of Camden fun. Collins played Reverend Eric Camden. He wasn't the brightest crayon in the box, but he had a knack for finding everyone and anyone who needed help. It's kind of ironic to me that the last episode that I watched of this show focused on rape while Collins has admitted to sexual molestation.

I have to admit, I just watched the episode a few weeks ago. I am known to watch reruns like my life depends on it. So as I sat there watching this rerun on rape and a young girl who had been attacked by her mother's boyfriend, I felt all the usual emotions. Yes, it was a cheesy show from the 90's, but it can still get to you. Now I am struck by all kinds of feelings as I think about Collins admitting what he has done to presumably young girls. This whole thing is still sketchy. Collins hasn't been charged with anything and so therefore the story remains to have a real backbone. Allegedly, Stephen was in therapy and admitted to some things a few years back. The news first broke that the state of California had submitted evidence and then the media got hold of it. Later it was revealed that his estranged wife let some evidence leak from some recordings she made in therapy without Collin's knowledge. Now the wife is saying some pretty outlandish things that I won't even dane to mention on my blog.

So I guess now the question is: are the allegations true or is this a wife's very invested vendetta? The question remains to be answered. Either way, Collins career is ruined. If he has done these things he should seriously be disgusted and if not then the wife should face some penalties.  Hopefully in time the truth will be told and whatever party needs to face penalties will. The theme song mentions coming home and Collins won't be doing that anytime soon. Although no matter what happens I think I will have a hard time seeing Collins as a pastor with good intentions from here on out.

True Detective Season 2

With Taylor Kitsch, that kid from John Carter, being the newest addition to True Detective it seems like a well-rounded cast to say the least. Kitsch will be joining Collin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and probably Rachel McAdams. All of these are great actors but I have two issues with this upcoming season.

First, there are some really big shoes to fill! Don't get me wrong, I seriously love the idea of a revolving door cast and making these seasons feel more like a miniseries. What makes it difficult is when you have such a dynamite cast the first season. It is going to be really hard for these household names, and Kitsch, to impress audiences after seeing McConaughey and Harrelson dominate in the first season.

My next thought is will Taylor Kitsch be able to fall in line with the big leagues? Yes, he has a few notches on his acting belt; but I'm not so sure that there are enough notches to catch such a big break as this. On one hand, good for him, this is a huge accomplishment and honor. Celebs have been clamoring over these roles for months now and he has win the jackpot. On the other hand, he must be not half bad for a network as prestigious as HBO to cast him. I guess time will tell, if he can hack the role or if his character will get hacked off.

And I have one more thought to add. I am puzzled by the choice of Vince Vaughn. I am not questioning his acting merit or abilities. I just think it odd that he is being cast in such a serious show. Looking at his filmography his one great whack at anything other than slapstick comedy was his semi-successful romantic movie The Breakup. Which I'm pretty sure made all it's money because the costars were truly dating. Maybe the writers want to McConaughey Vince Vaughn. Matthew wasn't taken very seriously as a deep method actor and then suddenly he is chasing down the bad guys and his whole career basically implodes. I hope Vaughn gets McConaughied (and yes, I just made that a term!). I can see it. Either way, Vaughn is a great addition to the cast. I am just curious about the personality and depth of his character.

After all this deep thought I am even more excited for the show to get started. It will be awhile but it's going to be an exciting ride when we get there. Season one was a slow start but a phenomenal finish. I am hoping for full horsepower from episode one this time around.

I Don't Think We Will Find Out How She Met Dad!

As a late joiner to the HIMYM series, I felt like How I Met Your Dad sounded like an overworked and tired idea. It appears now that I am not the only one whom feels this way.

Greta Gerwig and Meg Ryan were announced in big roles as the star and the narrator. In addition, a couple other minor stars were cast. However, there has been no news of production of the show. I think the idea is dead on the production room floor. When HIMYM first came out I felt that it was a washed up, bad revamp of Friends. Three seasons into the show I realized that it did have some merit and could stand on its own. But there apparently isn't anything for this spin off to stand on. Why they didn't try a spinoff about Barney is beyond me. Neil Patrick Harris could carry his own show with ease and he is red hot right now. How can the writers come up with new story lines without reusing something from one of the nine seasons of stories they have already used?

The idea sounded nice at first. But that was before the writers tanked their own finale.  And before people have had time to come down from the HIMYM.  Guess we will have to find another sitcom to watch. I hope it is something with brand new plot lines.

Why do People Care about Renee Zellweger's Face?

Here are the facts: Renee Zellweger's face does look different. She stepped put recently and the public jumped on her about why her face seems to have undergone some type of transformation. It's not a good transformation, but really who cares?

There are so many people in Hollywood who have had botched plastic surgery. The public freaks out about it and then moves on. This too shall pass. My amazement is that people haven't noticed sooner. Personally, I noticed on the award circuit of 2013 that Zellweger's did not look like her typical self and hasn't since then. I even commented on it in my blog after The Oscars. But today people seem to notice what has been around for close to two years now. Zellweger had bad plastic surgery.

Nicole Kidman has gone through extensive surgery along with Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian and Lauren Graham. Let's not forget Catherine Hicks and how 7th Heaven hid her face with haircuts and camera angles for the last couple seasons of the show. The latest seem to be Zellweger and Kylie Jenner's lips. I guess my point is that many celebrities go through extensive changes to look more accepting to the public eye. People care for a day or five days and then the next explosive story breaks.

So why care in the first place? I'm not trying to be crass but sometimes the media makes too much out of something small. I logged onto Facebook today to see every news site covering this story.  Let it go people, it's not your face. And poor Renee, let her be.
