With this week being the opening week of my favorite sport, I thought this post would be most appropriate. I am not a major sports fan, but I seriously love baseball. I love everything about it. I used to only be in it for the food, I'll be honest, but living in Kansas City with all the KC Royal's fans for six years really gave me an appreciation for the sport. I love my royals, but the Yankees are my true team and my heart of baseball. Judge all you want, but no matter what team you are biased toward, you will want to check out my list below of the best baseball movies, they are in no particular order, but these are the best of the best in my opinion.
- A League of Their Own I could write a whole post just on this movie. It is seriously one of those films that never gets old. It's a movie where you can truly see the heart and the soul of the characters and can watch them grow over time. If you haven't seen it yet, this is the time. It stars Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Jon Lovtiz, Rosie O'Donnell and more. '
- Fever Pitch I'm going to admit that I have only seen this movie one time and it was long ago. But it stars Jimmy Fallon and that's really all you need to know. It's not the greatest movie ever created, but they can't all be stupendous. What you will get is a great romantic chick flick surrounding baseball, and there is nothing wrong with that. It plays out the classic tale that many wives/girlfriends live during baseball season: the passion of one sport being stronger than the passion for a relationship.
- Angels in the Outfield It's an oldie but a goodie. But you won't be sorry watching this one because young Joseph Gordan-Levitt and Matthew McConaughey are in it. This is a good one to watch with kids no matter what age they are. It's all about the love of baseball.
- The Sandlot A classic from the moment it was made. This movie transcends time and I think it always will. Nothing more that needs to be said, this movie stands alone.
- The Rookie Maybe I am biased because this films stars Dennis Quaid. And seriously, that is a huge possibility because I pretty much am in love with him, but I thought the movie was also pretty good. It follows a Texas baseball coach's journey to making it in the major leagues.
- Field of the Dreams Kevin Kostner and James Earl Jones take the lead seats in this baseball story. It's also a timeless movie and the tagline says it all: "If you build it, he will come." I honestly think that my childhood is encapsulated with James Earl Jones, so I am also partial to this film because of that factor. I mean he was in this, The Lion King and I always watched him on Touched by an Angel and Everwood.
- Moneyball It's a newcomer to the league of baseball movies, but it's also a truly great movie. It follows Benny Beane (Brad Pitt) and his dreams of assembling the Oakland A's finest team yet using cutting edge technology that was just coming out at the time. It's definitely one to watch for the first time or again for the hundredth.
- Trouble With the Curve I will agree that many baseball fans were disappointed by this film. I think they were hoping for the movie to be more about the baseball and less about Clint Eastwood's character's declining age and his issues with his daughter. However, I really liked the film. I blogged about it late last year when I saw the pre-showing and although it was a little slow, it was a unique look into an area of baseball that hasn't really been covered in films. I'm talking about the perspective of the baseball scout, which was new and exciting.
This week on Friday there is also a new movie opening up called 42. Honestly, I would make it to the theater immediately because it looks spectacular. The movie is set to follow the story of Jackie Robinson and the struggles that he encountered when coming into his career. It's a biopic but one that looks to have been done the correct way! I'll definitely be checking it out, will you?
