To say that this film is incredible doesn't bring it any justice. The film is beautifully crafted, amazingly directed, breathingtakingly shot and brilliantly portrayed. But that still doesn't shed enough light on what takes place in this Osama bin Laden hunt-down Kathryn Bigelow took on a massive project crafting this story and her effort shines through in the story and in the cinematography.
The essence of the film is raw and meaty at the same time. Its raw because of the emotions it will evoke inside of you. Some of the film is created to be like a thriller, but all along watching it you are completely aware that it's a true story. As the precious seconds go by you know what will come at the end, and as you try to brace yourself for the intenseness of that, there is also immense tension building the whole time. The meaty comes into play because this film is covering a time span of over 10 years. It starts with 9/11 and continues until after the night of OBL's death. There is so much that needed to be covered. The time skips make your heart jump more than anything because you know that you are one step closer to watching the team go into the fortress when OBL is hiding out.
Seeing the inside life of a CIA operative is earth-shattering. As a person who is very aware of the world since 9/11, I was very fidgety for the duration of the film until the last thirty minutes. I was anxious, knowing all along what would happen, but then again not believing what I was seeing. I do of course believe that all of the events that were on screen happened but it's hard to watch something you know to be true played out this early after the event. Watching Argo a few months ago was intense and that was a true story, but of something that took place 30 years ago. This movie catching flack, praise and all kinds of other news all regarding whether they released too much information or incorrect information. All signs of too much press leads me to think that the film must be extremely accurate is there is so much news surrounding it. But hey, what do I know, I am just a twenty three year old blogger. In 6o years when the case is opened we will all know the truth, but I would expect that the truth will look reminiscent to this film by that time.
Jessica Chastain gave everything she had to play this part, and damn does it show. Her portrayal is effortless, she literally takes on the character. Nothing of Chastain is left when she is onscreen, only her character remains. That's an extreme talent that only a few names can master, Meryl Streep being one. She doesn't waste a second of her onscreen time and uses every facial expression and comment to get her character's message to the audience. Her character, who is named Maya to keep an identity safe, is a strong-willed woman who is single-minded on taking OBL down. She spends her entire life starting right out of high school working on that one mission. At the end of the film when all is said and done Chastain shows us how this woman must have felt. So overjoyed that the whole ordeal was finally complete and yet having no direction in life afterward and no way to figure out what's next. Imagine being that close to this whole thing and then having it be over. She dedicated her life, time, and put everything else on the back-burner for over eleven years and was able to achieve her life goal. I have no qualms that this woman in real life probably still works night and day for the protection of our great country, and for that I am very thankful. There is also not a doubt in my mind now that Jessica is the frontrunner for every award she is nominated for. And when she wins, because she will take most of them, I will cheer for her and praise the work that she has done. This film has skyrocketed her into a whole new region of acting, when she was amazing and incredible before it even graced the screen.
The supporting cast adds even more depth to the story and their scenes fulfill the questions that most of us have faced over the past eleven years. New light is brought to situations that as the public we merely thought we understood. Chris Pratt and Joel Edgerton could not have done a better job. They each play the two major characters of the NAVY Seals team that goes in to get the job done. The attention to detail during those scenes, every step that was taken and every door that was blown open was very carefully calculated. Being based on true events there was some direction of where to go but the men who played these roles also brought their own ideas. The other CIA operatives and the men who play higher up in the CIA were all beautifully cast. The movie moves so well because the cast is so in tune with one another.
Seeing this movie was an intense, but amazing experience. It is a must see and will be known as the greatest Chastain film for years to come. I say a good well done to all and they should look forward to all of the awards that they will receive.
