Lifetime Achievement Award, SAGS 2013

As I wrote about yesterday, tomorrow is the Screen Actor's Guild Awards. They air every year on TBS and it is sure to be a good time. This award show is usually the most playful of the season. It has a light airy feel and that's thanks to the fact that the actors themselves choose who wins. You should definitely be wise and turn in.

The other great thing about the SAGS is the Lifetime Achievement Award. Since 1962 actors have been commending the work of other actors in a very meaningful way. Last year, Mary Tyler Moore was the winner and the presentation of the award was very moving. I still remember sitting on my couch watching this year's recipient Dick Van Dyke present her with the award. Mary looked frail and old, but still overwhelmed and excited. It's so great to live in a country that has such amazing and deep roots in cinematography and acting. And it's even better that we honor these individuals who have made television and film what they are today.

This year, as I mentioned, the recipient of this award is Dick Van Dyke. And who doesn't love him? I mean seriously, I have never had a conversation in which someone goes: "Van Dyke, eh, he's alright." No one says that because the man is acting gold. I grew up watching him in Mary Poppins. As a person who loves impersonations and accents, I always thought his fast talking character was the best. Then I got older and I saw several episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show and then in my teens I saw Night at the Museum. When looking at his filmography I realize that I don't know much of his work, but what I have seen of it is top notch, stellar work that actors can only dream to achieve. I also know that his acceptance speech will be graceful, poised and will make sense, sorry I'm not sorry: Jodie Foster. The additional reasons that put Van Dyke over the top for this award are his humanitarian accomplishments and also his Broadway runs. It's a rare thing in Hollywood to be around as long as Dick has and I think it's outstanding that he was choice to be the recipient of this year's award.

The award will be presented to him by Carl Reiner and Alec Baldwin. Good choices if you ask me. Nobody needs to be told how great Reiner is and though most people feel the need to defend their choice of Baldwin by backing him up with all of his amazing costars, I think Baldwin can stand alone on his own two feet as a great actor. No doubt that these two have cooked up a great presentation of the award. I offer my congratulations to Dick Van Dyke and I encourage you to all tune in tomorrow. I will be tweeting from @jentertainment7, however it might not be in live time.
