Hitchcock

Packed with lots of names, Hitchcock is a unique movie experience. Anthony Hopkins delivers a very intriguing performance. He wasn't bad but at the same time, it wasn't truly great either. The HFPA and the Screen Actor's Guild agree with me on his lack of talent in this role. There isn't anyone who stands out to me who could have fulfilled the role better, but something was amiss from the usual sparkle that comes through when Hopkins graces the screen. His costar and leading lady, Helen Mirren has been acknowledged by both parties previously mentioned. She was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actress in a Leading Role. Her acting was as it always is; Mirren is the queen, much to my dismay because I think Meryl should always take the cake. Mirren could do absolutely nothing in a movie and still get nominated for an award, but that is because she is a gifted actress.

The other stars who filled this screen in this quirky look at Alfred Hitchcock's life were Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel and Toni Colette. All three of them were great in the small roles that they were set to play. Each time I see Johansson in something I am growing to like her more and more. She was a very believable woman of the 1950's in this film and her acting as an actress was delicate and well thought out. Jessica Biel, honest to God, did the best acting of her career in this film. Her role was small, but again filled with grace. I think there is something to her portraying someone from the past that added an elegance to her acting and made it that much better. She has come a long way since 7th Heaven.

Overall, I would give the film 3 stars out of 5. It was good, but very different from what I was expecting when the lights went down. The trailers seem to say that the movie will focus on the filming of Psycho, and while it does the more present focus is on Hitchcock's marriage to Alma. The ensemble was great and very well put together. Acting off of one another is a crucial piece and in this film it was done extremely well. If you are into seeing all movies that have been nominated, then go for it. But my advice would be to wait and see this one when it is available on netflix.
