The day after the Academy Awards is always the most satisfying and the most dreaded. Award season as we know it is officially over but the silver lining (you see what I did there?) is you get to discuss how well your predictions panned out with your co-workers and most importantly who was best dressed and worst dressed. This year is no exception. This is going to be an exceptionally long post, but I really hope you will read the whole thing. I have so much to say about the awards as a whole and as a continuing tradition I am bringing back the lists that I have created for each award show this season, plus some new ones as well. I also have a full review for you here on the pre-show, red carpet and the big Kahuna, the actual Oscars along with some hidden information you didn't see and some unique facts that most people don't know.
First up, E! does a pre-show of the red carpet every year called Countdown to the Red Carpet. Whoever is behind the concept of this show, let me just say that I want to be best friends with you. In the past, these kind of shows can be mundane and filled with information that us entertainment junkies have known all season. Instead, this show offered awesome facts, live entertainment, predictions and tons of behind the scenes information. All the while you get to hang out with the cream of the crop from E!
The red carpet was amazing this year. I watched coverage both on E! and on ABC. I still favor E! because I think the hosts, Giuliana Rancic and Ryan Seacrest, ask better questions and I really like both of them. The best moment from the red carpet was when Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dustin Hoffman ran into each other. The cuteness actually began in the limo where Sally Field and JGL arrived. She tied his bow tie for him. That is just the sweetest thing in the world, and if you are that close with Sally Field, you are one lucky guy. Then when Ryan Seacrest was in the midst of transition from interviewing Sally and JGL to Hoffman, Levitt got introduced to Hoffman for the first time. It was a great moment where you were watching mutual adoration for the other's work. Spectacular.
Best Quotes of the Red Carpet
"I liked it because it was sparkly and fluffy" -Quvenhzane Wallis on her choice of dress
"I'm starving. Is there food here?" -Jennifer Lawrence reliving her stressful day preparing for the big event

Most of the dresses were truly beautiful this year, obviously when you look at the worst dressed list you can tell. I couldn't even make it up to ten people. A definite metallic trend was present. I didn't include Michelle Obama on the list because she wasn't at the actual event. However, her dress was absolutely stunning when she was shown to present for Best Film. Interestingly enough though her dress was censored in countries around the globe that have Muslim backgrounds. Her dress was again favoring the metallics with a modest neckline and spaghetti straps. In some countries she was somehow shown with a higher neckline and sleeves, the things that technology can do these days is astonishing.
Best Hair
Reese Witherspoon: I don't think you could find another soul on the planet who has better hair than Reese. If you do, let me know. Her hair last night was straight up regal with the loose curls screaming Hollywood glamour.
Jennifer Lawrence: Her dress was flawless and so was her hair. The best part was it went beautifully with her whole ensemble of an outfit and was still enough to grab attention.
Worst Hair
Bradley Cooper: I truly hope that he is using this long hairdo of his for an upcoming role, because otherwise it should have been cut over two months ago. Don't get me wrong, the man is still beautiful but the gel is in his hair was out of control.
Amanda Seyfried: She made my best dressed list but her hair looked like she had slept on it. I am aware that the loose, messy updo is in style, I favor a messy ponytail myself but her flyaways were downright crazy.
The actual show was awesome. I heard some people at work today say that the show is actually really boring. I know that I am a movie freak, and so I guess I am immune to the whole boredom thing, but I thought the show was the opposite of boring. It did drag on, but the Oscar's always drag on. They present all 24 of their awards, while other shows emit things like sound and production design. Jentertainment's final score was 15 out of 24 in the prediction ring. I am pretty proud of myself, it is a definite improvement from last year and there is only room for more growth.
Seth MacFarlane was a one time only host. I can almost guarantee you that you will never see him at the Academy Awards ever again, let alone hosting them. But to all the haters out there, we got exactly what the Academy and most of us excepted, rude jokes that are still downright hilarious. Yes, a few of them were pushing the envelope, but this is the writer of Family Guy. I was not expecting a family friendly show and my expectations rang true. All that being said, hosting the Oscar's is a lot of pressure and I think that Seth did a great job.
Best Quotes of the Night
"And the quest to make Tommy Lee Jones laugh starts now!" -Seth MacFarlane's opening monologue
"Oh hell, we all know Anne is going to win." - Sally Field during the monologue, who then proceeded to make out with Seth MacFarlane, one of the funniest moments of the show might I add.
"You guys are just standing up because I fell, and that's really embarrassing. But thank you." -Jennifer Lawrence's acceptance speech for Best Actress after tripping up the stairs
"It's a strange thing because three years ago before we decided to a do straight swap, I had actually been committed to being Margaret Thatcher...and uh Meryl was Steven's first choice for Lincoln. I'd like to see that version." -Daniel Day Lewis' acceptance speech for Best Actor
"I'd like to thank my wife, who I don't normally associate with Iran." -Ben Affleck's acceptance speech for Best Film
Highlights of the Show
I had a hard time narrowing down the highlights of the show. So much of the show was breathtaking from the pairing of the presenters, to the little jokes, to the humbleness of so many that won. It's hard to pick just a few moments to shine. But, of course I did it anyway.
-Jennifer Lawrence, Ben Affleck and Daniel Day Lewis' acceptance speeches were all phenomenal
-Quvenhzane Wallis. Just her essence and her adorable self.
-Adele's tears as she won and how humble she was onstage not only show her character, but the gravity of what the award truly meant to her.
-Meryl Streep being onstage. We all know I love her, and I missed her not being nominated for an award and therefore being ignored the majority of the night. But at least Seth knew better than to even try to introduce her. She looked regal in that dress and the world silenced to listen to the queen present.
-The performances, all of them. I loved the theme of the night which was Music in Film. All of the performers were great but obviously I am going to highlight the cast of Les Miserables by saying that they made me cry. I have shed tears both times I have seen the movie and again last night, the performance was absolutely riveting even with Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe.
-Michelle Obama presenting the award for Best Film. She was so gracious in saying how much each of the nine films meant to the world. It's such a true statement because those nine films were all so meaningful and each one of them has brought something new to the life of film that has forever made it better.
The Moments We Could Have Lived Without
There's always a few things that don't come across like they are supposed to, or people who show up to receive the awards that don't fit the image in your head. Here are the things that seemed amiss to me, or just downright hysterically awkward.
-Anne Hathaway's acceptance speech. All of you Jentertainment addicts out there knew you would find this topic amidst the exorbitant amount of information in this post. I won't get into it all again but did she have to say: "It came true!"?! I don't think so.
-Everyone who accepted for a smaller behind the scenes award seem to be related to the Malfoy family in Harry Potter. The guy who accepted for Life of Pi gained a lot of nicknames for himself in my house last night including but not limited to: Lucius Malfoy's brother, Legolas Barbie, and the man with the same hair as the old woman in Titanic.
-Shirley Bassey sang Goldfinger for the 50 years of Bond tribute. She received a standing ovation at the show but I was giving her a laughing fit because her voice was a little too over the top to me.
-Daniel Radcliffe being paired with Kristen Stewart to present. I felt so bad for him, it's not fair that was he was paired with her just because they both starred in major franchise films. KStew was definitely on some sort of drugs and the foot injury was a little too much for me. On a side note, she also needed to brush her hair and put makeup on the bruise on her arm. She was on the up and up on my list but she is slowing sinking back down.
-Paul Rudd and Melissa McCarthy's presenting gone wrong. Listen, I love both of these actors and I know what they were trying to do, but it didn't work. You can't beat Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell as a presenting pair, you just can't.
I loved every second of it, even the bad parts. And I was so happy to go to bed when it finally ended. A fantastic night in Hollywood was had and I cannot wait until next year! Look for my post tomorrow on who next year's host should be.
