Hope Does Truly Spring Eternal

Just got back from seeing Hope Springs, and I know that no one doubted she would, but she has done it again!! Meryl shines like the star that she is in this film. In my opinion, she has never played this character before. Normally, she doesn't fulfill roles on screen in which her character has low self-esteem. She fulfilled this role with such grace and smarts, and I seriously mean this next statement: no other actress could have fulfilled this role. Sure, someone else could have been cast, and the movie would have been made. But, this role of Kay would not have been fulfilled. Streep steps in and takes over the character, as she always does. You find yourself lost in the viewing of the story and forget that you are watching Meryl Streep acting.

The real surprise here was Tommy Lee Jones' performance. He was nothing short of amazing himself. I saw a clip of Meryl and Tommy Lee talking this morning and Meryl was discussing how this film has gotten the nickname Fifty Shades of Grumpy. That could not be more true watching the film, Tommy Lee does the grumpy old man act so well. I have never seen him act with more confidence, in a film that could really knock an actor off their confidence train. The nitty gritty details of the film are simply sex. The two of these actors as a pair not only accepted the challenge but they succeeded with flying colors.

The triple bonus to this movie is Steve Carell. He does all of his acting, with the exception of the credits scene, from a chair. He takes this role by the horns, tackles the tough dialogue and shows his growth as an actor. I have always been a fan of Carell, and his work. This summer with this film and with Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Steve has done nothing more than show us he is more than a funnyman. In fact, his layers of acting are much deeper than that. I am sure that we will see much more from him in the next years.

Run to the theaters to see Hope Springs and be ready to laugh and cry.
