Lauren Graham: when I hear her name there is just such an awesomeness attached to it. Lauren is an extremely successful actress and now she has written her first book (which she says Diane Keaton inspired her to write it!). Myself, and most other girls my age, feel like we have grown up with her as a mother figure. The ever-beautiful, brave, and fashionable Lorelai Gilmore touched our lives growing up, making us feel like we could do anything and be anyone we wanted. Now, a new generation (and the old one) get to watch her on Parenthood. A different role, but nonetheless she is still a fabulous mother figure. I literally have watched anything I can get my hands on that she is in. I can't get enough of Lauren Graham.
Which is why a few weeks ago I blogged about how I instantaneously downloaded her book the second it was available. I admit, life got ahead of me, but last week when I was sitting on planes I caught up with the lovely character of Franny Banks. What I didn't quite realize when I purchased the book was that the story was semi-autobiographical. You can feel Lauren's words jump off the paper as if she is speaking them to you. It seems that she is telling her own story while infusing parts of other people's stories along the way. The book itself is powerful and filled with emotions, disappointments, and celebrations big and small. As a reader you become automatically attached to Franny and want her and her roommates to find nothing but many successes in life as they struggle against the current of being a 20-something in New York City. I found the book fascinating and there was the extra bonus of Franny finding inspiration in both Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton (only two of my personal favorite actresses). I also loved the ending to the story, which I am obviously not going to discuss, because I firmly believe each one of you should pick up this book and read it.
Graham gave all of us Gilmore Girls fans out there a gift by writing this book. I know how you all feel out there. We are all screaming: "Gilmore! Gilmore! Gilmore!" like Lorelai yells: "Coffee! Coffee! Coffee!" We've been feeling deprived and have been missing our Friday night dinners since 2007. But we haven't lost our sense of camaraderie for the show or its characters. I know I sound stupid exposing the fact that I watch Gilmore Girls more frequently now as a 20-something than I did when the show was actually on. But there is something within the relationships of that show and Stars Hollow that invite all of us back as fans. If you have even an inkling of these feelings then you really need to read "Someday, Someday, Maybe" because Lorelai Gilmore and Lauren Graham are within those pages. You will feel the familiar feeling and you may even hear Carly Simon singing the theme song in your head. Check it out, you won't be sorry. And Lauren if you are reading this, please know that you have been a huge inspiration to me and countless others, and we could not be more thrilled for you and the success of this your first book. Here's to many more adventures.
