Last night the Brits put on a great show! The annual BAFTA awards aired with host Stephen Fry. I still have no idea who he is, but all I can say is that he is funny. His jokes were surprisingly really hysterical and he obviously knows everyone in Hollywood. Fry has been the host for seven years, and all I can say is that if Ricky Gervais had hosted the Golden Globes again, I would be begging for Fry to cross the pond and take his place. But thankfully, we Americans now have Fey and Poehler, which I am eternally grateful for.
Most of the stars did not show up in their usual best. Helen Mirren was definitely one of these people. She showed up sporting light pink hair, which I am really hoping is a wig. Poor Jennifer Lawrence, someone told her it would be a good idea to sweep all of her hair back and leave it down like a mop. But she still looked beautiful. Sadly Anne Hathaway's dress was really pretty but the two best looks of the night belong to Jessica Chastain and Sally Field.
There were big wins for almost every big movie, including Skyfall. Check out all of the televised winners below:
Outstanding British Film: Skyfall
Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz for Django Unchained
Special Visual Effects: Life of Pi
Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables
Adapted Screenplay: David O. Russell for Silver Linings Playbook
Best Director: Ben Affleck for Argo
Leading Actress: Emmanuelle Riva for Amour
Leading Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln
Best Film: Argo
No real shockers in the mix, but a few of these are now huge predictors for the Oscar's. I really think that Argo has huge chances of now winning for Best Film. I know everyone thinks it won't happen because usually Best Director and Best Film go hand in hand, but Argo and Ben Affleck have swept almost every award. I'm calling it now, Argo for Best Film at the Oscar's.
And sadly, yet again Hugh Jackman was overlooked for Best Actor. I think that Daniel Day-Lewis keeps winning for two reasons: 1. He is Daniel Day-Lewis. As much as Hugh Jackman is great, he is a newcomer to drama and most of the voters feel like they are paying DDL his dues. 2. He plays Lincoln, I feel as though some of the voters feel they have a civic duty as well. He played one of the most famous Presidents, so how can I vote for anyone else? These categories are always hard when comparing the performances of these actors who bring such a range of roles to the table. Not to mention there are a lot of politics involved. I am just praying that Hugh Jackman wins, but I am starting to lose hope.
