What a night it was at the Golden Globes! Amy and Tina were amazing as hostesses, but I think the general consensus, which I fully endorse, is that there was not enough of Poehler and Fey. We were left wanting more, especially when Lena Dunham came and stole their award! Fey & Poehler's quick jokes were more than hilarious. If someone else had said some of them they would have been offensive, but not coming from these two golden ladies. The list of presenters was full of their comrades including Aziz Ansari, Jason Bateman and my favorite pair of the night: Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig (see quotes below). A well-rounded night with one magical star missing, none other than Meryl Streep. I was extremely sad for a few moments, but when DQuaid came out to present an award my spirits lifted.
The entire show ran smoothly and with few mishaps or bleepage for cursing. There were a few moments we were all unsure of the actual verbage being uttered whilst on our couches, but overall it was a relatively clean night with the exception of Quentin Tarantino. I was elated for Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain along with Adele. All three women had very cute and endearing acceptance speeches. Hugh Jackman winning made me smile from ear to ear and hearing "Do You Hear the People Sing" while the whole cast was coming to the stage truly made my night. What didn't make my night was Anne winning, her speech or her bellowing into the microphone when the film won. Amanda Seyfried was visibly embarrassed by her, and so was I sitting at home. Boo Hathaway, that is all on that subject.
Top five moments of the night:
1. Argo winning for best drama film
2. Jennifer Lawrence exclaiming "I beat Meryl!"*
3. Ben Affleck giving Jennifer Garner a kiss when he won for best director
4. Bill Clinton's presence
5. The HFPA president asking Bradley Cooper to "call her, maybe"
Best Unplanned or Hilarious Looks of the Night
Totally was not planning on this category but last night was a night for looks and faces in the crowd
1. Mel Gibson with his mouth wide open the entire time that Jodie Foster delivered her less than normal, deranged speech (which had something to do with backing up Kristen Stewart, but she doesn't need defense anymore)
2. Tommy Lee Jones watching Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell refer to Meryl Streep as a "sassy sheriff" during their hilarious presentation of the best actress in a comedy or musical.
3. Taylor Swift's demon stare when Adele won over her.
4. In turn, Adele's gleeful look when she did win.
5. Paul Rudd and Salma Hayak saying "Hi!" with weird faces plastered across their smiles as they waited for the cue that seemed to never come.
Best Dressed (in order)
1. Julia Louis-Dreyfus
2. Isla Fisher
3. Claire Danes
4. Jennifer Garner
5. Sofia Vergara
6. Julie Bowen
7. Jessica Alba
8. Sarah Hyland
9. Kate Hudson
10. Hayden Panettiere
Worst Dressed (in order)
1. Ariel Winter
2. Lena Dunham
3. Sienna Miller
4. Katherine McPhee
5. Lucy Lui
6. Debra Messing
7. Amy Adams
8. Emily Mortimer
9. Jessica Chastain
10. Jennifer Lawrence
Those last two are sad because they usually choose such beautiful things (or their stylists do!) and they both won big awards. But the red carpet doesn't lie, what's bad is bad.
11. Bill Murray- He wasn't necessarily badly dressed, but for the love of God please get rid of that disgusting handlebar mustache
Best Quotes of the Night
"I haven't really been following the controversy over Zero Dark Thirty, but when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron" -Amy Poehler poking fun at Kathryn Bigelow
"Harvey, thank you for killing whoever you had to kill to get me up here today." -Jennifer Lawrence expressing her thanks when delivering her acceptance speech
"Not you Daniel Day-Lewis, anyone can grow a bloody beard." -Sacha Baron Cohen during his raucous presenting
"Russell Crowe had four months of singing lessons. Well that was money well spent!"-Sacha Baron Cohen
"Congratulations, Lena, I'm glad we got you through middle school." -Tina Fey addressing the room after her and Amy were snubbed
"Anne Hathaway, you gave a stunning performance in Les Miserables. I have not seen someone so totally alone and abandoned like that since you were on stage with James Franco at the Oscars." -Tina Fey
"Judi Dench! I mean, where did she come form? A former police officer, and here, in her first movie, she's just terrific." -Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell (best duo of the night!)
"Look how drunk Glenn Close is!" -Tina Fey
"Thank you very much! Goodnight! We're going home with Jodie Foster!" -Amy Poehler steals the best line of the whole night
*As much as people.com is saying that this is a dig at Meryl Streep because of the movie First Wives Club. I believe that was in no way Jennifer's intention to directly quote. I think she was in shock that she beat out three of the top actresses int he world for an award, one of them being Meryl Streep. Streep is iconic and beating her is magical in and of itself. Jennifer is not a mean-spirited person and I know she didn't mean to cause a stir.
