Alright, here we are at day three of our week of top ten lists. Today's topic is movies to watch when you have just been broken up with. I decided to chunk the list into two different categories.
First up, the movies that will help you move on. These movies document fictional breakups and help you to feel as though yours is less significant, easing the pain as you sit on the couch and eat a bucketful of ice cream. On this list we have:
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
The Break-Up
He's Just Not That Into You
Under the Tuscan Sun
The Holiday
All of these films have the element of what you are probably already feeling. Jennifer Aniston has it in both The Break-Up and He's Just Not That Into You. The latter is one of my favorites, because even though some couples do end up happy in the end, which you may not be feeling at this point, it's realistic enough that you won't mind. Forgetting Sarah Marshall will make you laugh and cry and then cry and then laugh. And did I mention that the only reason you will be crying is because you will be laughing so hard. That's the beauty of that film, not to mention that it stars number one funny man, Jason Segel. The Holiday shows such raw emotion that you can cry the whole way through with Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz. But don't worry, you will be crying because their problems are worse than yours. And the little old man will help to make you feel all better. Under the Tuscan Sun follows a woman who has been broken up with as she travels away and has a fresh start in Tuscany. All of these films are great, but don't stick with them too long. That's what the next chunk is for.
This next group of movies is for when you start to realize that not only are other people around you going to be in love, but that someday, somehow, you will want to move on too. These films are just mushy gushy enough that you won't vomit, but instead, begin to be open to the idea of moving on. The guys in them are not only hot, but they represent a safeness and security that you probably want to have at this time. Here we go,
The Wedding Date
The Princess Bride
The Sweetest Thing
How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days
It's Complicated
My favorite choice from this list would be It's Complicated, not even because it stars Meryl Streep but because of the realistic dynamic that exists when there is more than one man involved in your love life. The film will make you laugh and you will eventually realize through watching the characters, the dumb mistakes you have been making in your love life for quite some time. Or maybe that was just me, either way...it's a great film and you will probably pee your pants during the party scene. The Wedding Date is one of my all time favorites because of the security that the dark and silent Dermot Mulroney brings to the screen. I have turned to this film many times before when I feel like I don't have a lot of hope left. The cousin is the best role in this movie and she always makes me laugh every time. How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days has just the right amount of cheese. It's not too cheesy to turn you off, but it has the little bit that will make you feel like any relationship is possible. The Princess Bride and The Sweetest Thing are feel good movies that are good at any time, but they are definitely distracting and will take your mind off anything for a good two hours.
