First off, I just want to set the record straight. This post is about the downfall of specifically the Disney Channel. In it's entirety, Disney is an amazing company that produces fantastic films and everything that goes along with them.
I just feel like when you look at the rise and fall of the Disney Channel, we are definitely past the point of the fall. I don't see a turn around any time soon either. I guess that I have special insight to the Disney Channel because not only did I watch it daily for years myself, but now I see it regularly because I have a young sister.
The shows used to be epic. You had Lizzie McGuire, Even Stevens, The Suite Life of Zach and Cody, Hannah Montana, The Famous Jett Jackson, and Bug Juice. Who could forget crying over those kids leaving camp, one of the first reality shows ever! Then, came the Disney Channel Original Movies. The best were: The Lizzie McGuire Movie, Jett Jackson Movie, Zenon (all of them!), The Luck of the Irish, The Thirteenth Year, Halloweentown, Cadet Kelly, The Even Stevens Movie and more. The old Disney Channel of the late 90's and early 2000's had it all. It was impossible to turn on the channel without being sucked into whatever was on.
Now, the shows are awful and what's worse is the acting. Every single kid who gets cast in a show now has the automatic path to a record deal. Their voices are over-simulated with computers, and the worst part is today's kids don't know any better so they buy the songs, DVDs, and memorabilia anyway! The best shows now would definitely be considered mediocre back in the day, but in my opinion they are Phineas and Ferb and Good Luck Charlie. Don't get me started on the bad shows, but I will say three words: Shake It Up. Lets just say Disney should have definitely revisited that pilot script before granting the series the green light.
Kids will watch anything on television because it is mindless and entertaining. It's the same reason that we watch it as adults. But it's truly a shame that a multimillion dollar company that generates and produces such great things has let this channel fall so far. I am hoping that with some of the shows coming to an end, they will re-vamp the entire channel and give it the much needed makeover it deserves.
