Based on real events that took place when a bunch of teenagers decided to use websites like TMZ and Perez Hilton to rob celebrity homes, The Bling Ring is an excellent film. For 90 minutes you watch what feels like a documentary but is really a story that keeps you entertained and enthralled the entire time. The film is based on the article in Vanity Fair called "The Suspects Wore Louboutins." If you like fashion, celebrities, or Emma Watson then this movie is for you.
I literally enjoyed every minute of the film and found myself going crazy over the clothes and all the merchandise that gets stolen from stars like Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Audrina Patridge, Lindsay Lohan and more. You will walk out of the theater wanting to be one of the Bling Ring girls, even though they committed many different burglaries. I am sure that I loved this movie but that a lot of people in California will hate it. Young people will hate it because they will think they are being depicted wrong and being stereotyped, while the rest of California is probably still ashamed that these events happened. I think that no matter what has happened, the movie is fabulous, so they should all appreciate it.
All of the actors are fabulous and fulfill the roles of the inflated Californian fashion and fame-obsessed teens seamlessly. Emma Watson shines in her first role as the bad girl. Her demeanor is completely different than Hermione and all of her other roles. I am so incredibly happy that she will be sticking around for a long time because she deserves a place in Hollywood. Weirdly enough though, Watson is not the star of the film. It's an ensemble cast but there are definitely two people whose storylines are bigger and brighter than the rest of the group. Katie Chang plays Rebecca, the ultimate star of the film. She has done basically nothing before this film, but you would never know it. The style and grace that she brought to her role were amazing. Israel Broussard plays Marc, the new kid in town who gets wrapped up in his new friends and the illegal acts they are all committing. Vera Farmiga's youngest sister Taissa is also a member of the cast. She has a lot of new movies coming out this year along with some television work as well. Claire Julien completes the cast of the five robbers and she is equally as amazing as the rest of the cast. For so many young actors to make a movie that is so brilliant is quite an achievement and accomplishment. They were led of course by none other than Sofia Coppola. She was not only the director, but also the writer and it shows through in the film. With her family ties and her extreme talent herself, I knew this movie was bound to be golden and I was not disappointed.
