I know I am really late seeing this film because it came out in 2012, but I don't care. After traveling to redbox last night and picking up Butter and Thats's My Boy I was happy that I decided to put in the first one first. Everyone should see Butter for multiple reasons but let me give you the first reasons now: the actors. This is a movie literally loaded with people. Some who are very famous for good reasons and some who tend to be overlooked for their talent. The cast includes: Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell, Phyllis Smith, Yara Shahidi, Rob Corddry, Hugh Jackman, Ashley Greene, Olivia Wilde and Alicia Silverstone. See, it's literally chocked full. And I swear Alicia Silverstone is not actually annoying in this movie (which is an accomplishment all in itself!).
The second reason why this movie is so great is because of the comedic talent behind the cast and the chemistry that they had together. Let's face it: the movie is about a butter-sculpting competition: it's weird! The cast had to get into that art form, I can relate it most to The Office. It's a bunch of people running around doing and caring about weird stuff that doesn't usually happen in real life. But the key is that it is hysterical. I laughed so hard during this movie but especially during one scene. Rob Corddry plays the foster parent for Yara Shahadi's character. They are sitting in the car about to go sign up for her to be a butter carver and they have a discussion about all of the things that could go wrong when she enters the buildings. Piranhas, bears and racist ninjas are on the list with about two dozen other things that just make you laugh. This is a conversation that we have all either had with someone else or had in our own head when heading into something that we are dreading or have apprehensions about. The movie was real and unrealistic at the same time, which I have to admit is one of my favorite things about film. You can be transported to a different place full of things that you encounter in your daily life and in your dreams and they are put together to make sense.
The film is fantastic and of course the cherry on top is that it features my husband Ty Burrell. Just kidding! I have this running joke with my family that he is my husband because I want my future beloved to be just like his character on Modern Family. He is also spectacular in this movie along with my new favorite Hugh Jackman. It's a movie about heart and soul with a whole lot of butter and comedy thrown in.
