Billy Crystal, Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei are the huge names attached to this Christmas' big family movie Parental Guidance. The film could be described with words such as cute, humorous and family oriented; but the film would be nothing without those big names.
I am not trying to criticize the film. When you look at other family movies that have surfaced in the years past, there are always big names attached to them.
Exhibit A: Steve Martin & Helen Hunt in Cheaper by the Dozen
B: Dennis Quaid & Rene Russo in Yours, Mine & Ours
C: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz in Shrek
Films that are made for families have to include some person or people that will make the adults buy the tickets for the whole family. Then the films make more money and money makes the world go round. I am not stupid or oblivious, I am just pointing out facts. Another fact that I am pointing out is that Bette, Billy and Marisa are the only reason that movie was made.
All that being said it's a quirky family film surrounding a daughter grown up and moved away. She raises her children very differently than her parents raised her and new technology plays a huge role in her and her husbands parenting ways. Cue Midler and Crystal as they come to stay with the kids for a week while the happy couple goes on a business trip vacation combo. The film is filled with the antics that you would expect: some toilet jokes, a few crazy kid personalities, singing from both Midler and Crystal, hilarious voices from Crystal and great facial expressions from Midler.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't see the movies. The acting is actually pretty spot-on and the kids that were chosen for the roles are quite talented for their young ages. The film is doing pretty well for itself bringing in 14.6 million just this weekend. Here at Jentertainment however, I just want you to know what you are getting yourself in for.
