Oscar Nominations

This morning the nominations were announced for the 85th Annual Academy Awards. To say how I feel in one word would be difficult because quite frankly, it's a toss up. The list includes a lot of really good nominations but other people and films are noticeably missing.

Overall, Lincoln is definitely the frontrunner to do the major sweep of the year. It is nominated for 12 awards. Coming in second is The Life of Pi although it received no acting nominations at all. Silver Linings Playbook scored a nomination in every acting category which is amazing! I couldn't be happier for that film and the success that it has had.

Best Director
Jentertainment Score: 2 out of 5. This is a sad but true fact.

Ben Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow and Tom Hooper are most likely still crying their eyes out because they were left off the Best Director list. To say this is a heartbreak would be insufficient, it indeed is a travesty. I was more than sincere in my predictions for them all to be on the list, especially Affleck. I honestly felt that this was his year to shine. Argo is a monumental masterpiece, but apparently not to the members of the Academy. I was correct in saying that Spielburg and Lee would get the call in this category. If Spielburg wins this will be his third best directing Oscar.

Best Film
Jentertainment Score: 7 out of 9

In past years this has been the category that receives the most flack. However, since the nominations have dropped this morning people seem to be completely at ease with the nods. It's still a tough race and it's anyone's to take. However, because of the missing nods for Hooper, Bigelow and Affleck there is little chance that their films would win this category. Disappointing but true.

Best Actor
Jentertainment Score: 3 out of 5.

Again, Affleck was left out here. I am trying to come to terms that Daniel Day-Lewis will win, but it's hard for me to grasp when Jackman deserves it more than anyone has in years. Bradley Cooper is grinning from ear to ear right now because he finally accomplished his greatest dream. I cannot imagine the happiness that he has in this nomination.

Best Actress
Jentertainment Score: 3 out of 5.

I feel as though this is the hardest category to predict every year. Even before I blogged, and I just merely watched the Oscar's like all the other normal people I couldn't understand how this list was compiled. This year is no exception. Two records were broken this year in this single category. Quvenzhane Wallis became the youngest person to ever be nominated. She is currently nine years old but when Beasts of the Southern Wild was filmed she was a mere six year old. In turn, Emmanuelle Riva is the oldest woman to ever be nominated at the age of 85. I still havent made up my mind as to who will take the coveted award, but I will sooner or later. No matter what, the stakes are high. Chastain is definitely the frontrunner but Silver Linings Playbook is becoming something of a cult with it's followers so it's all in the hands of the academy.

Best Supporting Actor
Jentertainment Score: 4 out of 5

This was one of my best predicted categories. It was easier to call than other years because all of the nominees have won awards before. All of them played similar roles but in very different films. I think the award will belong to Tommy Lee, and I am more than okay with that. He was the only redeeming quality of Lincoln in my opinion.

Best Supporting Actress
Jentertainment Score: 4 out of 5

This is one of the times that I could not be happier that I was wrong. In all my readings leading up to today I honestly thought that Jackie Weaver didn't have a chance. But she more than deserves it. The award already belongs to Hathaway in most people's opinion. If you need a refresher on my thoughts on her in Les Miserables, see my full review by scrolling down. I will be non to happy if she wins, but such is life  I suppose.

Best Costume Design
Jentertainment Score: 4 out of 5

This category is of course not hard to predict when you look at the films of the year. But it's a well rounded list of films including Lincoln, Mirror Mirror, Snow White & the Huntsmen, Anna Karenina and Les Miserables.

Best Original Song
Jentertainment Score: 3 out 5

Best Makeup
Jentertainment Score: 2 out 3
