I have just had some very sad news confirmed, Ann Curry is really leaving The Today Show. I have ben hearing rumors of this for a few months now, as I am sure that you have as well. This is devastating to me. I have grown up watching Ann for years before school, through college and now on my weekends and summer days. I know that she has a huge fan base, but it seems that she is being asked to leave the show. What is worse is that it seems she will be gone very soon, even before the Olympics start.
A few months ago when the rumors first surfaced, it seemed that she wasn't getting along too well with co-anchor Matt Lauer. Everyone in America and beyond loves Matt Lauer, but this makes me have an uneasy feeling about what is really going on behind the scenes. The show itself has always seemed to have a great camaraderie, from the days of Katie Couric to the more recent of Meredith Viera. It only seemed logical that when Meredith decided to leave, that Ann be promoted. I know that my family was truly excited, because we thought that she deserved the promotion before Meredith was even brought onto the scene. It seemed that NBC had recognized that Ann's time to shine was way past due. The whole show had a huge celebration for Ann on the first day of her co-anchoring and everything seemed to be hunky-dory. But apparently, not everything is as nice as it seems.
I am sure that a huge part of this all going on is what was reported about a month ago. For the first time in more than a decade, Good Morning America had more viewers than The Today Show. As crushing as that must have been, I do not think that is the true reasoning behind give Ann the cut. I am intrigued to see what will come out of this whole decision and what kind of aftermath will be created. It seems that Savannah Guthrie will be asked to step into the role of co-anchor opposite of Matt. What I think is strange about that is that Savannah really hasn't been that involved on the show in a few months. I think the logical choice would be to promote Natalie, but NBC seems to at least think they know what they are doing. I hope they are making the right choice, but I am truly sad that Ann is leaving. Best of luck to you Ann, I know that we will continue to watch you report on amazing things.
