Yesterday I went with the fam to see the re-release of Titanic. We decided to see it in 3D and when we got to the theater, the only showing was IMAX 3D. The tickets are ridiculously overpriced if you ask me, at $16 a pop, but it was really well worth it. Apparently, other people thought so too. The re-release brought in $17.4 million nationwide. When you consider the amount it made the first time around, it looks small. But thinking about movies that have been released again in 3D, it falls in second behind The Lion King.
Last week, I blogged about how much I love this film, and that fact still stands true today. Seeing it in IMAX 3D did more than just enhance the picture, it brought life to it that it never had before. At one point, someone left the theater and when they came back in it looked as though they were coming out of the screen. The IMAX screens are so big that you get enveloped into the movie. The film is great in itself, but adding the 3D really made you feel as though you were on the boat. The elegance of the ship was so much improved, down to the details of the fireplace in Rose's suite all the way to the dolphins that are swimming directly in front of the ship in one of the opening scenes. It was all majestic in a way that I can't really put into words.
The film was of course the same, but again it was like it was all brand new. I had forgotten so much of the plot line, being that the film is 3 hours and 15 minutes long. I love the scene where Jack takes Rose into steerage for a "real party." You could see the beads of sweats on the characters' faces as they danced round and round.
And just like I always have, I got swept up in the emotion of the film as well. I know that it can be seen as cheesy and that a lot of people poke fun at it, but if you don't feel anything when watching the old couple cuddle in their bed to die...then you are cold as stone. I also really enjoyed the film this particular time because I was explaining it to my younger sister as we watched. I love seeing movies again through her eyes, its like the first time, but even better. She wanted to know so badly if both Jake and Rose would make it to the end. I would warn her about the scary parts and it left me feeling like I was watching it for the first time myself.
If you were at all a fan the first time around, definitely go sail on the Titanic again.
